Mosaic base materials compared: wood, foam-core tile backer, and Yard Mosaic ASA

A mosaic base is part of a system, not just a shape. Water exposure, edge treatment, stiffness, weight, attachment method, adhesive compatibility, and storage all matter. Wood, foam-core tile backer panels, and Yard Mosaic's outdoor-grade ASA backers each begin with different strengths and constraints.

Water usually finds the details

A material marketed for outdoor or wet-area use can still depend on correct treatment of edges, seams, fasteners, cutouts, and mounting points. The tile, adhesive, grout, and sealer do not automatically correct an unsupported or poorly detailed base.

Plan where water can enter, drain, or remain trapped. Follow the substrate maker's system instructions instead of mixing components based only on similar product names.

Match the attachment method to the finished weight

Wood and panel projects need a separately designed hanging or staking method. That connection must account for the finished mosaic's weight, leverage, wind, and any holes or penetrations made in the base.

Yard Mosaic backers include a channel tested with specified 3/8-inch stakes. That fit does not make every finished design suitable for every height or site; use smaller, lighter work as height increases and favor sheltered placement.

Do not group every printed plastic together

Polymer type, additives, print orientation, wall thickness, internal structure, surface texture, color, and part geometry can change performance. Advice for Yard Mosaic's outdoor-grade ASA backers does not establish behavior for PLA, PETG, resin prints, acrylic, PVC, or another maker's ASA part.

Outdoor exposure testing of Yard Mosaic material and finished samples is ongoing. A small system test and removable seasonal display remain sensible even when each individual material is described for exterior use.
